According to a surprising new poll by the wildly liberal UC Berkeley, 74 percent of Californians would like to see sanctuary cities banned for good. This marks quite a turnaround for one of the most progressive states in the Union.
California is home to several jurisdictions which refuse to abide by federal immigration laws. These so-called ‘sanctuary cities’ offer safe harbor to the illegal aliens who flee to California from South America and refuse to deport them back to their countries or origin.
The issue to end sanctuary cities in the state crosses racial and party lines, with 65 percent of Hispanics registering their agreement, while 70 percent of independents, 82 percent of Republicans, and 73 percent of Democrats feel the same.
During President Donald Trump’s term, sanctuary cities could see a cut in federal funding and pushback from the Department of Justice under likely Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
It would appear that nearly three-quarters of California residents agree with President Trump that all cities with the United States must comply with federal immigration laws. As we know, he has made illegal immigration a priority, both on the campaign trail and at the subsequent start of his new administration.
According to The San Diego Union-Tribune, an estimated 650 criminal offenders are released onto California’s streets every month in violation of the transfer request into federal custody. This puts legal residents in danger, as many of these aliens go on to commit violent crimes.
Additionally, California denies almost two-thirds of the nation’s rejected alien detainer requests. It has been suggested for the Trump Administration to publish a weekly report of all released criminal aliens that will be a public record. This would help deter sanctuary jurisdictions from harboring convicted criminals.
