Warning: This story may trigger my fellow moms out there. The mama bear in me wants this story everywhere because it surely triggered me!
Having a baby is simultaneously the happiest and most nerve racking times in a mother’s life. The day you welcome your little baby into this world is unforgettable and sacred. The worry a parent feels about their children begins the day they are born and never ends. You will do anything to protect your child.
Most new moms feel that their new baby is in the safest place in the hospital nursery. People who choose to take care of newborns should be the best of the best, with caring hearts and patient spirits. But sometimes some bad apples slip through into a position they are clearly not qualified for.
No mother could even imagine that hospital staff would mistreat their baby, much less think it’s so funny that they post it to social media. But that is exactly what happened when two young, female staff members at a military hospital decided to post what they considered hysterical and it ended up all over the internet.
H/T Daily Wire
“At least one and possibly two female military corpsman at the Naval Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, allegedly posted pictures of newborn babies and made videos in which they handled them like puppets dancing to music.
In addition to the outrageous treatment of newborns, Corpsman Allyson Thompson has been accused of posting a picture on Snapchat of a newborn as she flipped the baby off, along with the caption, “How I currently feel about these mini Satans.” Another corpsman, Joanie Barrett, reportedly participated in the incidents.
A military spouse who discovered the photos and videos reported them to the Naval Hospital. Her Facebook update stated:
“After me and my mom tried getting someone on the phone for like an hour, she finally got someone who was over her and it’s been reported.. all screenshots and video was sent to her phone via text and she has talked to her CO and they’re taking the next steps of investigating it and she is being punished.”
The posting of pictures and possible shaking of the newborns was a huge violation of HIPAA.
Naval Hospital Jacksonville’s Commanding Officer stated:
‘We are aware of a video/photos posted online. It’s outrageous, unacceptable, incredibly unprofessional, and cannot be tolerated. We have identified those involved — two junior enlisted corpsmen (not nurses). They have been removed from providing patient care and they will be handled by the legal system and military justice. We’ve notified the patient’s parents.’ “
It’s just shocking to think that these staffers thought this was funny. It’s amazing that neither one of them stopped and thought “maybe this isn’t a great idea.” But young people can be really stupid sometimes and I think it is safe to say that these two have probably just made the biggest mistake of their lives. They should be fired immediately and never allowed to be near patients again.
Someday, these female corpsmen may become mothers. It will only be then that they realize the horrific feeling that comes when your child is mistreated. I’m sure they thought they were just being funny and it was harmless. What does that say about our culture today?
